Harshit Rana replaces Bumrah in squad
Indian fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah suffered a major setback when he was ruled out of the ICC Champions Trophy due to a recurring back injury.
The injury, sustained during the Sydney Test in January, had also forced him to miss the white-ball series against England. Despite undergoing a recent scan in Bengaluru, Bumrah had not fully recovered from the discomfort in his back.
The scan did not show any new issues, but it was confirmed that Bumrah was still unfit to resume bowling. His recovery would be closely monitored by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) medical team at the Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru. No official timeline for his return to bowling had been provided at the time.
Bumrah’s injury marked the second consecutive ICC tournament he had been forced to miss, as he had also been sidelined from the 2022 T20 World Cup due to a back injury that later required surgery.
Harshit Rana had been called up to replace the injured, Bumrah in India’s squad. Along with Rana, Varun Chakravarthy was included in place of Yashasvi Jaiswal.
The ICC had set the deadline for the final submission of the 15-player squads for the Champions Trophy as February 11.
