PCB Chairman provides update on opener’s recovery timeline; Final squad announcement deadline looms
Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Chairman Mohsin Naqvi confirmed that opening batter Saim Ayub’s foot cast is expected to be removed within “a day or two,” signaling progress in the player’s recovery from a right ankle fracture. The update comes as Pakistan faces a February 11 deadline to finalize its squad for the ICC Champions Trophy, scheduled later this year.
Speaking to media in Houston, Naqvi stated he remains in daily contact with Ayub’s medical team and emphasized caution in managing the 21-year-old’s rehabilitation. “Saim’s recovery is ongoing, and we are prioritizing his long-term fitness,” Naqvi said. “While the Champions Trophy is crucial, we will not rush his return. He is a valuable asset to Pakistani cricket.”
Ayub sustained the injury on the first day of the second Test against South Africa earlier this month while fielding. Initial assessments ruled him out of cricket for six weeks, casting uncertainty over his availability for the Champions Trophy.
The PCB has not yet confirmed whether Ayub will be included in the 15-player squad for the Champions Trophy, though his potential return to light training post-cast removal could influence selection discussions. Team medics are expected to reassess his mobility and match readiness next week.
Pakistan’s final squad announcement, mandated by the ICC by February 11, will hinge on fitness updates for several players, including Ayub. The tournament, last held in 2017, will feature eight top-ranked ODI teams, with Pakistan among the automatic qualifiers as hosts.
Ayub has scored 416 runs in 15 T20Is since his international debut in 2023, earning recognition for his aggressive batting style. His absence would leave selectors weighing alternatives such as Fakhar Zaman or emerging talent Mohammad Haris.
The PCB has not disclosed contingency plans for Ayub’s replacement, though Naqvi reiterated a “patient, evidence-based approach” to player health. Medical protocols for ankle fractures typically involve gradual reintroduction to physical activity, suggesting Ayub’s immediate return to competitive cricket remains unlikely.
Further updates are anticipated after the cast removal and subsequent evaluations.
