Leeds Test: Ben Duckett’s superb century powers England to crushing victory over India

A superb century by Ben Duckett helped guide England to a sensational five-wicket victory over India in the first Test on Tuesday, after a thrilling final day. The hosts successfully chased a target of 371 – the tenth-highest successful run chase in red-ball cricket history.

The dramatic turnaround began at Headingley, where India had looked dominant at 430-3 in their first innings. However, England staged a remarkable comeback. Openers Duckett and Zak Crawley calmly steered England to 117-0 by lunch in their second innings, suggesting a comfortable path to victory.

Duckett maintained his imperious form, reaching his sixth Test century with a stylish four through the covers. Although Crawley was dismissed for 65, their 188-run stand marked the second-highest fourth-innings opening partnership in England’s Test history.

India clawed their way back into the contest with two wickets in two balls — Duckett and Harry Brook both falling in quick succession. When Ben Stokes was dismissed for 33 attempting an ambitious reverse sweep, England’s hopes of victory hung in the balance.

However, Joe Root’s composed unbeaten 53 settled nerves at his home ground. The former captain, alongside Jamie Smith — who sealed the match with a six — saw England home. This result came despite India scoring five centuries in the match, as they still contrived to begin the five-Test series with a defeat.
