IPL 2025: Cummins fined for slow over rates in Lucknow match

The Indian Premier League’s (IPL) revised code on over-rate violations came into force on Friday as captains of Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) and Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) were handed hefty fines for failing to complete their overs in the allotted time.

RCB’s designated captain Rajat Patidar, despite not leading the side on the field due to injury, was fined INR 24 lakh as the team committed its second over-rate offence of the season. Wicketkeeper Jitesh Sharma, who stood in as captain during Match 65 in Lucknow, was also among those fined.

Each player from RCB’s playing XI, including the Impact Player, was fined INR 6 lakh or 25 per cent of their match fee, whichever is lower.

SRH’s captain Pat Cummins was fined INR 12 lakh for a similar breach. As this was his team’s first offence of the season, he was spared a harsher penalty.

Under the new 2025 IPL regulations, financial penalties now replace suspensions for repeat offences. However, Hardik Pandya of Mumbai Indians served a suspension in the season opener, a carryover from last year’s rules.

The match itself saw SRH register a 42-run win over RCB, thanks to Ishan Kishan’s blistering 94 and Cummins’s disciplined spell with the ball. The result ended RCB’s unbeaten away record and dropped them to third on the points table.
