Jos Buttler stepped down after England’s underwhelming performance in Champions Trophy
In a major leadership shake-up following England's disappointing Champions Trophy campaign, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has appointed Harry Brook as the new captain for white-ball formats.
The 25-year-old rising star will now lead the national side in both One Day Internationals (ODIs) and Twenty20 Internationals (T20Is).
Brook takes over the captaincy from Jos Buttler, who stepped down after England’s underwhelming performance in the Champions Trophy, where the defending champions failed to make a significant impact.
The ECB acknowledged Buttler’s contributions and leadership over the years but said it was time to look ahead with fresh energy and a long-term vision.
Known for his aggressive batting style and calm demeanour under pressure, Brook has quickly become one of England’s most dependable middle-order batters since making his international debut in 2022.
The decision to hand the reins to Brook reflects the board’s commitment to building a dynamic and youthful side ahead of the 2026 T20 World Cup and the next ODI World Cup cycle.
"Harry is one of the most exciting talents in world cricket and has shown incredible maturity for his age," an ECB official stated. "His performances with the bat and his natural leadership qualities make him the ideal choice to guide England into a new chapter."
Jos Buttler, who led England to T20 World Cup glory in 2022, leaves behind a legacy of success and professionalism. While his recent run as captain saw mixed results, Buttler remains a key figure in English cricket and is expected to continue playing in white-ball formats as a senior player.
