Harry Brook tipped as successor
Jos Buttler resigned as England’s captain on Friday following a poor performance in the Champions Trophy in Pakistan.
The debate surrounding Buttler's role as captain intensified after England’s early exit from the tournament. Buttler made the decision to step down after England’s eight-run defeat to Afghanistan on Wednesday, which sealed their fate in the competition.
This loss, coming after a defeat to Australia in their opening match, ended England's chances of progressing further.
Having taken over the captaincy from Eoin Morgan in 2022, Buttler will lead the team for the final time against South Africa on Saturday.
Under his leadership, England won just 12 of their 34 One-Day Internationals, including a dismal defence of their 50-over World Cup title in India earlier this year.
Harry Brook had been widely speculated as Buttler’s potential successor, though concerns about his white-ball form remain.
