Joe Root notches half-century
Ben Duckett has not only registered the highest individual score in the tournament’s history but also propelled England to 351-8 against Australia in the fourth match of the Champions Trophy at the revamped Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore on Saturday.
After being put into bat first, England faced early hiccups, losing two batters – Phil Salt (10) and Jamie Smith (15) – for just 43 runs. But it was Ben Duckett's explosive performance that soon stole the show and captivated fans in Lahore.
Duckett found an able ally in seasoned campaigner Joe Root, as the pair stitched a 158-run partnership to steer England out of the doldrums.
Brendon McCullum will be proud of Duckett’s approach to batting, as he smoked an impressive 165 from 143 balls, including 17 boundaries and three towering sixes. Duckett was eventually dismissed by Marnus Labuschagne in the death overs.
Joe Root played a steady hand, creaming four boundaries in his cautious 78-ball 68.
Harry Brook failed to deliver a blistering knock, perishing for just 3 from 6 balls.
England’s skipper Jos Buttler tried to play with flair but was removed by Glenn Maxwell for 23 from 21 balls, smashing one boundary and one six.
Liam Livingstone could only manage 14 from 17 balls, which included one six.
Brydon Carse was caught and bowled by Labuschagne.
Jofra Archer, playing a key role in the death overs, remained unbeaten on 21 from 10 balls, smashing two boundaries and one six.
