Sources say doctors have advised him to take complete rest
Pakistan’s opening batsman Fakhar Zaman has been ruled out of the ongoing ICC Champions Trophy after sustaining a back injury during the team’s opening match against New Zealand at the National Stadium.
Zaman suffered the injury while fielding in the first over of the match, bowled by Shaheen Shah Afridi. Attempting to save a boundary, he successfully stopped the ball but landed awkwardly near the rope. The left-hander immediately signalled for a substitute before being assisted off the field.
The team physiotherapist attended to Zaman, who was seen clutching his lower back before being taken to the dressing room for further medical assessment.
Initial reports suggested that the injury was being monitored, but sources have now confirmed that doctors have advised him to take complete rest, effectively ruling him out of the tournament.
Zaman’s absence is a significant blow for Pakistan, who had relied on his experience at the top of the order. The team management is expected to name a replacement soon.
Pakistan, who opted to field first after winning the toss, will now have to reassess their opening combination as they continue their campaign in the eight-team tournament.
